[영어 표현] throw A off / I appreciate the gesture / cost-effective

1. throw 사람 off: ~을 혼란스럽게/ 헷갈리게 하다.

* It throws me off.
혼란스러워.

* She's just 12. I can't believe she's acting out. It really throws me off. 
(딸이 사춘기에 걸려 반항할 때)
걔는 겨우 12살이야. 반항한다는 게 믿겨지지 않아. 진짜 이해가 안가.

* I liked the design, but the color kind of threw me off. 
디자인은 마음에 드는데, 색깔은 조금 난해하다.

* It kind of throws me off that Mark chose them over us. I just can't make sense of it.
마크가 우리 대신 그들을 선택했다니, 믿어지지가 않아!

* This music really throws me off. I can't focus.
이 음악 진짜 정신 없다. 집중할 수가 없어.

 

2. I appreciate the gesture. 마음만 받을게요.

* I actually don't drink coffee because I have a low tolerance for caffeine, but I really appreciate the gesture.
카페인이 약해서 커피를 마시지는 않지만, 고마워요.

* A: Your birthday's coming up, so let me get that for you.
  B: It's okay. I appreciate the gesture though.
  
  A: 너 곧 생일이니까, 내가 그거 사줄게.
  B: 괜찮아. 마음만 받을게.

"I appreciate the gesture."는 실질적인 도움은 되지 않았어도 고마운 마음을 표현할 때 사용.
 
 

3. cost-effective: 가성비가 좋은, 비용대비 효율이 좋은

* Let's go with the first option. It seems it's more cost-effective.
첫번째 옵션으로 하자. 그게 더 가성비 좋아 보여.

* In the long term, it's much more cost-effective.
장기적으로 봤을 때는 그게 더 비용 대비 효율이 좋지.

* You should buy in bulk. It's way more cost-effective.
묶음으로 사. 그게 더 가성비 좋아.

영어로 가성비를 표현할 때는 "cost-effective"라는 표현을 쓸 수 있다.
 

cf. effective immediately

effective는 효과적이라는 뜻도 있지만 효력이 발생한다는 의미도 있다.
effective immediately는 지금부터, 즉시 적용된다는 의미.

Effective immediately, there will be a new commission structure.
지금부터 즉시 적용되는, 새로운 커미션 구조가 있을 예정입니다.
