[영어표현] offset / downside / vent

1. offset: 상쇄하다, (장점으로 단점을) 메우다 / 보완하다

* 캠브릿지 사전: to balance one influence against an opposing influence, so that there is no great difference as a result 상반되는 둘이 같은 비중을 가져서 결과적으로는 큰 차이가 없을 때

* I think we should move forward with the idea. It could offset our loss from last quarter.
내 생각엔 그 아이디어대로 진행하는 게 좋을 것 같아. 이게 잘 되면 지난 분기의 손실을 메울 수 있잖아.

* <지원이 없다면 그 손실을 메우기 위해 해야 할 예산 삭감이 클 거라며>
Without it, we wouldn't be able to provide the service period. The cuts that we would have to make to offset the loss of that funding would be significant.

* <비용을 지원해주는 연방 프로그램이 있다며> There are federal programs that can help offset the costs.


* <안 좋은 소식을 전하며 충격을 줄여줄 수 있는 선물을 들고 왔을 때도>
She came armed with something she hoped would offset the bad news.

* <어젯밤에 무리해서 피곤한 걸 줄이기 위해 커피 6잔은 마셔야겠다며>
I am gonna need like six of these to offset last night.

특히 장점으로 단점의 영향을 줄일 때, 좋은 점이 안 좋은 점을 가려줄 때

* Collins 사전: If one thing is offset by another, the effect of the first thing is reduced by the second, so that any advantage or disadvantage is cancelled out.

* His passion offsets his lack of experience.
그의 열정이 부족한 경험을 가려준다.

* <미소가 약간 비대칭이지만 턱선이 정말 멋져 균형적>
Your smile is slightly uneven, but it's offset by your strong jaw.

* <학생 밴드에 40대 남성이 오디션을 보러 왔을 때>
- He is an incredible guitarist.
- He's had a lot of time to practice.
- Maybe there's a way to offset his oldness.

* A: How are your settling in? 잘 적응하고 있어?
   B: It's a longer commute and a higher cost of living, but my family is happy that we moved. That offsets everything. 통근 시간도 더 길고 생활비도 많이 들지만, 가족이 이사 가서 행복해 해. 그게 모든 단점을 줄여줘.

* That offsets all the downsides. 모든 단점을 상쇄시킨다.

* <부정적인 영향을 거의 줄여주지 않는다며> Excuse me, this barely offsets the negative effects.

 

2. Downside: 불리한, 덜 긍정적인 면 (<-> upside: 괜찮은, 긍정적인 면)

* 캠브릿지 사전: a disadvantage or problem (단점이나 문제)

* <안 좋은 점이 있다면 뭐가 있는지> What's the downside, if any?

* The only downside is the high cost at the beginning, but in the long run, the benefits will offset the cost.
유일하게 안 좋은 점은 시작 단계에 비용이 많이 들어간다는 건데, 장기적으로 보면, 거기서 얻는 이득이 들어간 비용을 상쇄시킬 거야.

* <트레이닝을 받아서 안 좋을 건 없다며> There's no downside to these training programs.

* There are more downsides than upsides. (= The downsides outweigh the upsides.)
안 좋은 점이 좋은 점보다 많다.

* <좋은 점이 훨씬 더 많다며> The upsides greatly outweigh the downsides.

* <그렇게 해서 좋을 거 없다며> There's no upside to doing that.

 
 

3. vent: (감정, 분통을) 터뜨리다, 발산하다

* 캠브릿지 사전: to express a negative emotion in a forceful and often unfair way

* Please lower your voice. There's no need to vent your anger on me.
목소리 좀 낮춰 줘. 나한테 화풀이 할 필요 없잖아.
(Don't take your anger out on me. 나한테 화풀이 하지마.)

* <화가 나거나 답답할 때 게임하는 게 도움이 된다며> It's one way to kind of veny my anger and frustration without actually taking it out on an actual human being.

* Let me go get some air. I don't want to vent my anger on you.
바람 좀 쐬고 올게. 너한테 화풀이하고 싶지 않아서 그래.

* <누가 짜증나게 하는지 그냥 터놓고 말하라며> Why don't you vent? Vent your frustrations. Come on, who pisses you off? 

 

I'm sorry. I just needed to vent.

누군가에게 감정을 털어놓고 하소연할 때도 쓰임.

* <그냥 답답해서 한 소리였다며>
- What can I do? - Nothing.
- I just needed to vent. I'm okay. Thank you.

* <그냥 하소연 하는 거라며>
- I can talk to him if you want. - No, no, no.. That's not.. I'm just venting.

* <(대화를 유도) 이번 한 주 힘든 일이 있었으면 편히 말하라며>
